How would this have affected the 1929 stock market crash?

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

If someone were to travel back to 1929 and tell the whole world the stock market was going to crash and everyone took their money out f the stock market. Would this have prevented people from losing money or some how make the economy worse? Would the economy be different today? How? Sources?

Have you even bothered thinking about this?

1. Stock markets crash when everyone wants to sell and no one wants to buy. How is telling people that the market will crash going to help prevent a crash?

2. You think it wasn’t clear that the stock market rise in 1929 was a bubble? From 1921 to 1929, the Dow Jones went from 60 to 400. That’s more than 20% per year. That kind of growth can’t go on indefinitely, and anyone who believes it can is willfully ignoring reality.

3. When were you planning on doing this? Earlier in October of 1929? Earlier in 1929? Earlier in the decade? How were you going to get people to believe you?

If you had gotten the market to crash much earlier – say 1925 instead of 1929 – the results would have been much better. The depression that followed might have been a minor recession; it is even possible that there would not have been a world war.

But how would you get people to believe you? or to care? In the U.S. people were saying the housing market was in a bubble as early as 2001. By 2005, most economists agreed. Yet the Fed deliberately chose to do nothing until the bubble burst. And people kept buying till the very end.

What stocks should i buy in a stock market game?

Monday, December 28th, 2009

playing a stock market game for school. want to buy stock in companies that will hold steady or go up. suggestions? is apple a good buy?

Generally, the people or teams that do well in stock market games tend to pick companies with high volatility (i.e. companies who’s prices swing wildly up or down). You can find the most volatile stocks in the "over the counter" market. I have been pretty successful with my investment in Animas Resources, Inc. (ANIMF). The company mines gold. However, it’s not a game – I actually bought the stock. It’s gone up over 300% since I bought it. The price has been pretty steady for the last several months, but I think it’s set to take off again soon.

News Corp – Dow Jones – WGA – DGA – Kevin Martin – Jeff Imme

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

NEWS CORP officially completed its acquisition of DOW JONES yesterday after 60% of shareholders voted to close the deal. Rupert Murdoch soon showed up at the Dow Jones holiday party wearing a Santa hat. He brought some gifts, in the form of a new CEO, a new publisher and permanent vacations for several top DJ executives. The new lineup of News. Corp. veterans begins work today.

THE WGA has filed a complaint against the AMPTP with the National Labor Relations Board citing unfair practices. The Guild claims that the producers violated federal law by issuing an ultimatum and then breaking off talks. Meanwhile, the Directors Guild of America said it was ready to begin talks with the AMPTP after the new year.

KEVIN MARTIN will push ahead with the Dec. 18 vote on media ownership rules, despite complaints from legislators and the Senate Commerce Committee bill that seeks to block the vote. Martin told the Committee he would not delay the vote, ignoring complaints from both Democrats and Republicans.

JEFFREY IMMELT addressed speculation about a possible sale of NBCU during an interview on CNBC’s Squawk Box. Immelt said the company is too valuable to consider selling, despite its recent struggles. He acknowledges the rapid change hitting the industry, saying “Anyone that thinks the TV-network business is going to be the same two years from now is crazy.” However, he thinks GE is in a position to capitalize on that change. We’ll see.

WEBKINZ is suffering a Facebook-like consumer backlash after adding movie ads to the popular children’s virtual world. Traffic for the formerly ad-free site has surged by 800% this year and over 7 million unique users visited in October. Some of that growth may be in jeopardy, as the recent addition of ads for Hollywood films has angered parents and triggered complaints from The Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood. Some parents are blocking children’s access to the site, creating a challenge to the new ad-supported business model.
