What the hell is the Dow Jones?
Tuesday, March 16th, 2010What the hell is the Dow Jones and NASDAQ for that matter I read some stuff in wikipedia but that wasn’t much help. Can someone please explain this me. Is it a single publicly traded company or a group of stocks? I don’t get it.
You are probably referring to the Dow 30 (or the Dow Jones Industrial Average) and the NASDAQ composite. In these cases, they are indices that are used to track the overall health of the economy. They take into account several different companies’ stock prices and relay them as a single number. The Dow 30 is made of the stock prices of 30 different American companies and then modified for stock splits and other stuff like that.
Generally, these indices (and also the S&P 500) are used to measure the overall health of the economy.

It used to take us weeks to have one person go around an inventory the data center. We can now do it in an hour. It was a no brainer to go with a BMC product that integrates very well with our existing infrastructure.
This video is complimented by another review of the FTSE 100 market and a new video to come, showing a very convincing alternatice elliott wave count (in my opinion) to that of Robert Prechter.

Using free market tools at http://www.asxmarketwatch.com. The FTSE continues its bullish run, while the Dow Jones and ASX Top 200 continue to consolidate. This doesn’t mean there aren’t trading opportunities, however – and we look at two of my personal trades TEL (short) and CSL (long).
The Euphoric Dow Jones.

The average is named after Dow and one of his business associates, statistician Edward Jones. It is an index that shows how 30 large, publicly-owned companies based in the United States have traded during a standard trading session in the stock market.[1] It is the second oldest U.S. market index after the Dow Jones Transportation Average, which Dow also created. The Industrial portion of the name is largely historical, as many of the modern 30 components have little or nothing to do with traditional heavy industry. The average is price-weighted, and to compensate for the effects of stock splits and other adjustments, it is currently a scaled average.
