What the hell is the Dow Jones?

What the hell is the Dow Jones and NASDAQ for that matter I read some stuff in wikipedia but that wasn’t much help. Can someone please explain this me. Is it a single publicly traded company or a group of stocks? I don’t get it.

You are probably referring to the Dow 30 (or the Dow Jones Industrial Average) and the NASDAQ composite. In these cases, they are indices that are used to track the overall health of the economy. They take into account several different companies’ stock prices and relay them as a single number. The Dow 30 is made of the stock prices of 30 different American companies and then modified for stock splits and other stuff like that.

Generally, these indices (and also the S&P 500) are used to measure the overall health of the economy.
